My Students

My students attend school in the South Bronx every day for a chance to improve their current skills and to continue to succeed! These are all children who come from low-income families and have special needs, specifically autism. Many of my students are non-verbal, facing challenges daily of communicating with peers and adults at school, as well as with their family and friends at home and in their community. These students receive therapy (speech, PT, and/or OT) multiple times a week, either individually, or in a group. Each child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which requires all tasks and activities to be adjusted and changed based on the skills of each student. My students are always appreciative of new materials and items they receive!

My Project

Phonological awareness (oral language) skills is the foundation for phonics (written language). My student's skills vary working on rhyming to phoneme manipulation and letter/sound recognition to develop pre-reading skills.

The Early Language Folder Libraries, Teaching Phonemic Awareness Skills Activity Center, and Unifix(r) Phonics Small-Group will help my students improve on their phonological awareness and pre-reading skills to prepare for reading success.

The Storytelling Kits, Felt Story Sets & PROP-IT(r) Portable Literacy & Speech will enhance current reading skills to achieve mastery for goals related to reading comprehension and cognitive skills (recalling and retelling; answering higher-level questions about short stories, texts, and events).

We look forward to implementing these materials into our speech and language sessions!
