Help Ms. D'Amato

I am a second grade teacher at a Pre-K-8 school in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free lunch. As a second year teaching fellow, I am still in the process of garnering all of the many resources necessary in order to ensure that my classroom is an enriching and stimulating learning environment. One of the materials I feel is sorely missing is a classroom library of fairy tale favorites. I would like a fairy tale library for a number of reasons. I'd like to expose my students to the beautifully imaginative tales that are so often intertwined with childhood. (Some of the kids have only been exposed to these classics through Disney movies.) Also, fairy tales are filled with excellent characters in order for students to be able to do character analyses, and to identify common character traits. In addition, I would like to show my students different versions of the same fairy tale to demonstrate to them that a tale can change slightly depending upon the author and perhaps the culture that it is coming from. Many of my students do not come from homes that are filled with books or other print-rich materials. I allow my students to borrow books from our classroom library daily, and a fairy tale library would provide a wealth of knowledge to the students as well as their families.
