This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public Kindergarten through eighth grade school in a high-poverty, urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together.

My Kindergarten and First grade students are in a separate building without a music room so I go into their classrooms to teach music, bringing only the supplies I can carry with me.

The best way to enrich my lessons is by bringing different books with me so they can learn about music from different eras and countries.

My Project

We are requesting books and CDs to expose my students to music from different eras and countries. It's very difficult to teach younger learners without a music room since I can only bring them the materials I can carry. The best way I've found to engage them is by bringing a different book to read to them each class that teaches them about a new instrument, culture, or time period. Listening to these stories and seeing these illustrations and photographs has really given many of my students a strong background knowledge about the instruments of the orchestra.

My students love these stories but crave new ones that would expose them to even more about the world of music.

Additional books and CDs for our music library would certainly be enjoyed by all of my young students.
