My Students

My teammate and I have 135 fifth graders - four separate groups.

Everyday they enter our Language Arts classroom: some blirt a cheerful greeting, others give a little wave paired with a smile, a few quiet and contemplative: each student wonders, what's the plan today?

We love these spirited students - bright, dynamic, caring, and not afraid to laugh. We want the plan for each day to include time reading a quality novel. A novel that they will not only beg to read, but one that also models vivid figurative language, a strong and fast moving plot, and, of course, characters that develop to the point that the students expect them to open the door and walk right into our classroom.

My Project

My teammate and I use quality literature to teach students to read. The students' reading ability improves with every engaging novel they travel through - a most delicious outcome! We use quality literature so that our students discover the incredible magic of books.

As the students read, they continually analyze the text - including exposition, character, plot, and theme.

We tell our students that reading is the most important skill they can learn - because if they can read, they can teach themselves anything.

Help us put this marvelous Marigold novel into each hand so that each and every student can be one step closer to being captured by literature for life.
