My Students

Our 8th grade students are a unique group of learners who strive to explore the world around them. The majority of students at our school are first or second generation immigrants and English language learners. They also come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They do not always have access to explore beyond the city in which they live or the school that they attend.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, our Middle Years Program (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages 6th to 8th grade students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world.

Under this standard of academic excellence and rigor, opportunities for authentic learning are vital for all students; however, our student population, diverse in cultural and socioeconomic status, is not able to afford by itself what such experiences cost.

Students in this class are compassionate life-long learners. Many of our students have heard of Yosemite before, but have never had the opportunity to visit. They've studied the geology of Yosemite as 6th graders and have furthered their interest in the area. IB learners are always looking to take action. They are excited to take action through a citizen science project.

My Project

Eighth graders at Gateway International School have an opportunity to go on a two-night, three-day field trip to Yosemite. This field trip will help students make academic connections before, during, and after the trip, as they will actively engage in the scientific process through collaboration, while addressing real-world issues concerning the environment and climate change. Students will also take part in a citizen science project.

This learning adventure will offer limitless opportunities for students to explore the world around them in a special way.

Students will spend their days hiking in Yosemite Valley while learning about the geological processes that formed the Sierra Nevada mountain range and Yosemite Valley. They will complete team-building challenges and explore lessons on leadership while hiking to the top of one of Yosemite Valley’s waterfalls. Students will also hike in a giant sequoia forest while learning about the unique ecological interconnections that support these ancient and rare trees.

However, even with a generous scholarship from Nature Bridge, funds will still need to be produced to supplement costs and transportation. Our students are hoping that this will help to supplement their cost. With your donation in any amount, you can help send our students to Yosemite for the first time. This will help cover the cost of the experience in the park as well as transportation to the park. We are asking for any donation that would help us to provide this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for so many of our students at GIS. Many of our students have heard of Yosemite and learned about this place that Californians have a connection to, but have never had the opportunity to go. At the very least, if you could share this information, we would be grateful. Thank you for your consideration of donating to this worthy
