Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sweet, hardworking, English Language Learners. They are from very diverse backgrounds including Spain, China, Dominican Republic and that’s only to name a few! Seventy five percent of my students are either recent immigrants or have parents who speak little or no English. They are eager to learn and want to excel, but since the majority of their families do not speak English, the only time they can practice is at school with their friends and teachers. I strive to help them feel comfortable, confident and motivated to learn every day.

My Project

It is extremely important to me to help my students achieve their best. I know first hand the difficulties of growing up in a household that doesn’t speak the native language of the country to which they emigrated. I want to help my students so they grow up feeling confident and ready to be successful. I have learned that it is crucial to provide small reading instruction to students, especially those who are learning the English Language.

According to the Center for Public Education, if children cannot read proficiently by the end of third grade, they face daunting hurdles to success in school and beyond.

Throughout the day, I meet with children to support them in a small group for reading, writing, and math. In reading, they need books that are developmentally appropriate for their reading level. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student who has been struggling to read light up because they can read a book independently! When students are provided guided reading, they receive a short lesson and then they whisper read. During this time, I work with each student and teach them strategies on how to read unknown words. They LOVE this time since they get to read stories and then talk about it with their classmates. Unfortunately, I have exhausted the resources at my current school which is why I am in need of more guided reading books.

Lastly, my students would benefit from books on CD. We have a listening center in the classroom where the students listen to a book on a CD and they follow along as it is read to them. This really helps students hear the proper way of reading fluently and allows them to listen to a story uninterrupted.
