My Students

I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth-grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.

My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.

They use their critical-thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They want to know about our community and how they can have a positive impact on it.

My Project

We live in Southern California and many people say it is sunny 365 days a year. Since many of the new houses in our community are adding solar panels, the idea of using the sun as an alternative energy source is a question that my students often bring up. Solar energy has inspired my students to ask questions like, do you think one day the sun will power our cars? To help my students learn about solar energy I am requesting a class set of solar cars. My students will each build a car and will begin to see how solar energy can be used to power our future. After building the cars, we will have a class solar derby. Each student will race on several tracks. To help our spectators determine the winner, I am asking for 5 tournament timers. Before the beginning of the race, the crowd will count down. When we hit zero, the timer will start an the race will begin. Having a large timer will increase enthusiasm for the race and allow each track to easily determine the winner of each round.

Solar energy is a renewable resource and this project will inspire my students to think of new and exciting ways to use this energy.

It is important that my students begin to see how important alternative energy sources can be so that they can help create solutions for tomorrow.
