My Students

In my school, students are fortunate enough to be surrounded by children from around the world. Bangladesh, Russia, Dominican Republic, Yemen, India, Senegal and Nepal are just a few of the countries represented in my own small classroom.

With all the differences in ethnicities, customs, and overall culture they all have one thing in common - they are children!

My school is a Title 1 funded school with 100% free lunch for all students. Although these children are faced with many challenges outside our classroom, I strive to make their time with me safe, meaningful and progressive. I try to foster a love of learning while keeping them engaged in the work they have to do!

My Project

Today, school tends to be all about test and results so a teacher has to find a way to keep children engaged and motivated; to persevere through challenges and daily monotony. I believe teaching is not just about the curriculum but also showing my students that I care about their individual needs.

This year I started to implement "flexible seating" to keep my students moving throughout the day.

This philosophy is based on the understanding that all people work efficiently in different settings, under different conditions and with different materials. My students rotate around the room throughout the day. Some of my students like to sit on a standard chair at a desk while others prefer to bounce on a stability ball. I've brought in bean bag and bungee chairs, camping seats, balance disks and a small wooden bench. I also raised desks on bed risers to give them the opportunity to stand when they want to. Children need to move around to stay awake and focused while in the classroom and I'm hoping that encouraging movement keeps them on track.

I would like to bring in these wobble chairs to give them the space and freedom for the movement they need to encourage their best work! Using these chairs, students can move around in their own space without distracting others around them.
