My Students

Believe it or not, math is not an exciting subject for everyone. Some students struggle with mathematical concepts and have difficulty retaining information. My project seeks to engage students in a hands-on exploration of coordinate grids to increasing their understanding.

I teach fifth grade in a small rural school in North Carolina.

I am responsible for mathematics instruction for all 50 fifth grade students. My students have limited outside experiences, as many come from lower socioeconomic families. I try to provide a variety of hands-on experiences for my students to make math come alive and spark their interest in learning more about their world.

My Project

This project seeks hands-on materials for use in a study of coordinate graphing. I have found that when students become actively engaged in a lesson, children who may have otherwise been reluctant to show interest often become highly motivated to participate. The materials selected for this project will provide students with an opportunity to explore coordinate graphing in a variety of manners, making this often difficult math concept more manageable, while increasing students' understanding and awareness. The graphing paper will allow students to have the hands-on experience with understanding placement of coordinates while the wall chart will provide the opportunity for a visual for all students to refer to when working. As these materials are not readily available in my classroom, their presence would make a world of difference in raising students' knowledge levels of coordinate graphing while increasing their abilities to think critically and solve problems related to graphing.

Harnessing students' interest in mathematics is important, as we are preparing students to be future leaders.

It is my responsibility to ensure that students understand fundamental concepts and are well-prepared to tackle any mathematical challenges that are presented. This project seeks to provide students with opportunities to explore coordinate graphing through the use of hands-on activities designed to improve their understanding of this mathematical concept.
