My Project

Graffiti art has impacted many cultures around the world. As a graffiti artist in Northern California in the 1980s and ‘90s, I saw firsthand how the art of graffiti was used as a form of expression by young artists. Little did I know how much this aspect of the Hip-Hop culture would help me to grow as an artist, especially a graphic artist. I would like to pass on my knowledge to my students and show them how this art form can benefit them in multiple areas of drawing and design.

For this project, I want to teach my students how to design and draw successful murals using alcohol-based markers as the finishing medium.

“Burners” is the term graffiti artists used to refer to a complete mural that incorporates colorful, graffiti lettering, original cartoon-like characters, and a decorative background (as opposed to a tag or throw-up that was a quick means of spreading one's cognomen). Alcohol-based markers were a key tool for any graffiti artist in planning a burner to be painted later. I would like my students to have access to high-quality, alcohol-based markers in an array of colors, and sets of the Winsor & Newton Promarkers would be ideal for this assignment.

The students will do their best to create their own style or twist on a style of lettering that appeals to them after researching graffiti art. They will draw their names in that style and choose a color scheme for their burners (e.g., cool colors, warm colors, or a blend of both). They will also draw themselves as the traditional cartoon-like characters to be placed in their burners to add a more personal aspect to the drawings. Of course, sketching the ideas in pencil would be a necessary first step before coloring the final pieces.
