This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our Green Team is trying to heighten awareness around the waste that we generate as a school and the negative impact that waste can have on our planet! In order to do so, we have been celebrating Climate Action Days, hosting community clean ups and making informative videos about waste. Many students across our school building have been inspired by our work and now we need more materials to make our all waste management dreams come true. The litter pickers will help us engage more students and their families in our community clean ups. The green bins on wheels will help us to go classroom to classroom to collect paper waste at the end of each day since our custodial staff is unable to sort at this time. Currently, we have students bringing paper waste to a central location on each floor, but these rolling bins will ensure that our youngest of students can participate as well. Our next big push for waste management is composting as we will be beginning curbside composting in our school building on March 25th. All of the composting materials that we are requesting will be used as educational tools to teach about the benefits of composting and how it works. Our goal is that every student will feel confident sorting their waste in the cafeteria by the end of April, and we believe that learning more about why compost is so special will help us achieve that goal. Our school is large, and currently, we are struggling to sort our waste properly both in the classroom and in the cafeteria. We are hopeful that with these materials the Green Team will be able to better educate and engage our whole school community and inspire them to be leaders in waste management themselves!
