Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"A good financial plan is a road map that shows us exactly how the choices we make today will affect our future." Alexa Von Tobel. Now, more than ever, our children need to learn what it means to be good stewards over their money and what it means to earn, spend, and save wisely.

I have a culturally and economically diverse group of students, but the commonalities they all share and what I am most proud of are their great hearts and passion for learning.

They treat each other with respect and are sensitive to each others' differences. They maintain an "I can" attitude and understand that they are the keepers of their own success. They have a true desire to learn and are highly motivated to work toward their own personal best. I teach at a Title 1 school that serves a diverse population of children with varying needs. Despite challenges, our students continue to thrive both socially and academically, with the support of dedicated teachers, a hard-working principal, an equally hard-working office staff, amazing parents, and a wonderful community! I'm lucky to be part of such a great school!

My Project

The resources I am requesting will be used to develop my students' understanding of financial literacy through the use of technology and interactive learning. Students will work in groups and use the tablets to research the affect of education on income. Graphs will be created using the web Online Chart Tool and results will be displayed on the television and analyzed. PwC's lessons on Career Exploration and Spending and Saving will then be taught; students will follow the lessons by playing the Sense & Dollars online math game and The Game of Life to be streamed through the Chromecast. Students will then select a career, be given a budget using Bank-a-roo to maintain income and expenses. Students will research annual pay and the monthly breakdown and set a budget for the month. There will be a list of expenses and a few surprise expenses that they will have to account for. Tablets will be used to create a multimedia presentation showing their work and reflect student learning .

This project is so important because children have had such poor leadership when it comes to money and finances.

They are growing up in a world of financial crisis and will one day carry the burden of our debt on their shoulders. Therefore, it is important for children to learn about economics at a young age in order for them to make wise decisions about the money they earn in the future.
