Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We live in an ever changing world. Our expectation is that our students will constantly adapt to new standards, objectives and goals. At the start of the next school year, my students will be asked to increase their reading of non-fiction texts. Thus, the rub! We have none!

The students in my class amaze me every day.

They come to school each day, eager to get down to the business of learning, regardless of whether or not they've had breakfast, seen their parents, or even been told, "Have a good day." These students enter into the world of our classroom ready to meet the challenges set forth to them. They tackle everything with an energy and determination that astounds me. The fact that 95% of them are having to translate much of what they are thinking and saying back and forth between Spanish and English, to the point which any one of us would be exhausted, is beyond belief. I cannot express how deserving these students are, how much they would treasure the opportunity to explore materials that are at their level. They are so eager to learn and we desperately need to change the model by which they learn from being teacher centered to one that is predicated on their own explorations. These children can do anything they set their minds to!

My Project

The project that I am putting forth to be funded is one which will allow all of the students in my class to engage in Social Studies and Science texts on their own reading level. Currently, all of our Social Studies and Science learning happens in a teacher-centered, top-down learning paradigm. There is one set of books that is supposed to be watered down enough and low enough that all the students can read it without difficulty. I am asking for multiple sets of non-fiction texts on Native Americans, Space, and Fables so that each student in my class can have the opportunity to read, interpret, and analyze information independently. Learning happens best when students can grapple with material, draw conclusions, and interpret information for themselves. With the books from this project each student will have access to books on our Social Studies, Science, and Language Arts topics that they themselves can read. They will become active learners at last!

No more teacher centered learning for my students!

Please help me give my capable and deserving students the opportunity to really become active learners, crafting their own paths through the material. By providing these students with leveled sets of themed texts, each one of them will be appropriately challenged and given the chance to create meaning for themselves. This is a higher order thinking skill that is so critical to learning, and my students deserve a chance to soar on their own.
