My Students

I teach young students with a variety of exceptional needs, all of which making learning and engagement extremely challenging. Each child in my class enjoys learning but each one learns in a different way. On top of their learning challenges, many of our students come from low-income families. This makes it even that much more difficult for them to keep up with their peers and 21st-century learning.

My students are in constant motion and thrive on active engagement through hands-on activities and being creative.

They need different modalities to learn new concepts and strengthen current skills. We currently have flexible seating as well as small and whole group learning to meet the unique needs of all students. I am very fortunate and honored to learn from them each and every day.

My Project

The use of a classroom carpet is part of our daily activities in my classroom, especially during morning circle and our social-emotional learning time. Using the whole group model allows my students to come to the carpet as a classroom family. The carpet allows me to sit with them in their community circle and maintain student safety and most importantly respect for each other. Unfortunately, the rug we currently have in our class is over 10 years old is frayed and tattered. This has become a big distraction for my students. They focus on who sits where so that they can play with the loose threading. This definitely minimizes student engagement. My class also enjoy using our Amazon Fire tablets on the carpet and other activities.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve our classroom atmosphere with a new carpet, but you will also assist in teaching my students to be responsible for their classroom supplies with the tablet charging station and headphones.

Students will be able to simply consistently focus on the academic material at hand (not whether their tablets were charged the night before) and use the headphones so that they are not distracting their peers at teacher-directed centers. Plus in this technology literate world, consistent interaction with technology will increase their academic skills as well as build a positive classroom community!
