This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 2nd and 3rd year middle school art students. These students completed a course in art history last year where they learned all about the history of art in different cultures and the development of art materials.

Many of our students come from a low socioeconomic background.

Our school is 95% free or reduced lunch. Few of my students are able to take outside instruction in Art. My students are excited to learn on a daily basis. They take home what they learn and come back every day with new ideas for projects. My students are motivated by new and exciting projects. I try to use fun projects with a variety of materials to maintain an environment where exploration and new information is abundant.

My Project

My students will be using the oil paints, palette knives, canvas panels and paint thinner to begin their introduction to the oil-painting process. These students have already learned about the basics of drawing and painting. They have practiced observational drawing extensively and completed multiple paintings in tempera and acrylic paint. With these materials they will learn the methods that professional artists have been using for hundreds of years. Along the way they will learn about all of the planning and careful work that goes into completing a successful oil painting.

I want my students to be able to say, "I completed an oil painting just like Claude Monet or Mary Cassatt".

When we learn about famous artists we always discuss the materials used to create an artwork and how that contributes to the work. Very often those materials are oil on canvas. My students always ask if we can use oil paint and I find myself explaining how expensive oil paint can be. I would like to tell my students that yes, in fact, we will be using oil paint.
