Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to lose yourself in a story? My students have not yet developed the ability to recognize small moments in their lives and see the value of the story within.

I teach at a Title I, K-8 school at which over 80 % of our students are on free-and reduced-lunch.

Over half of the class represent English Language Learners. Our Native English Speakers represent a variety of ethnic heritages. While the third grade students in my class are a mixed group, they are all motivated learners. They are developing their skills as Bilinguals, learning to read and write in English and Spanish.

My Project

The books I have selected will serve us in a variety of ways. First, we will begin the year with a novel study that all students will be able to access. Students will be able to track the development of plot and character over time as Julian's life unrolls through the stories he tells. By purchasing 28 copies, each student will be able to hold, consume and enjoy a chapter book right from the start. Next, during our writing instruction, these stories will serve as mentor texts for our developing writers. They will learn how they can take small moments in their personal lives and craft these as stories, full of description, ready to publish for others to enjoy. Additionally, I have selected multiple copies of two books from author Allen Say. These personal narratives will help us continue our narrative study and will also serve to support our Social Studies curriculum. Both books detail aspects of the author's family's immigration to the United States.

The children will be able to enjoy and learn from the selected texts at various points in the year.

The books themselves will remain in my class for further classes to enjoy as well. Thank you for supporting us to build our classroom resource library. In doing so, you will support both the reading and writing development for our third grade students.
