My Students

Imagine walking into a classroom and seeing students sitting on a cushion on the rug exploring various concepts and immersed in hands-on exploration? This is a typical day in my class. My students are always working on projects or vying for a space on the classroom computers to complete projects

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

by Dr. Seuss... My students are the gifted students and the shining stars of our school. I teach 1st, 4th and 5th grade gifted students. They are thirsty for knowledge and the opportunity to explore the universe. Our school is in an impoverished neighborhood in the heart of Miami. Almost 100% of our students qualify for free lunch. Most of the students are from families of low socioeconomic status. My students do not have access to many things we take for granted, such as laptops, cell phones or Internet access at home. Their families have limited funds to provide these "extras" at home for them. The curriculum for the gifted students encompasses project-based learning, and many projects remain incomplete as students do not have access to technology at home. These students are loving and kind and I would like to give them everything they deserve to help them on their journey to a better life through education.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Asus Transformer tablets with wireless headphones for my students. This would be a much needed addition in providing additional computers and access to technology in the classroom! As our program is designed around project-based learning, most of the projects involve using technology. My students will be able to create their own Publisher brochures to depict traveling around the continents, and to create their own business plans using Microsoft Power Point slides. The wireless printer would be an added value allowing students to be able to print their finished product. Additionally, my students would love to work with the STEM hands-on learning games, which will reinforce scientific concepts. The first graders are always asking to sit on the floor on the rug and would enjoy showing their creative side using the building blocks. I can see my students learning and having fun at the same time!

Donations to this project will make a vast difference by improving the effectiveness of the classroom.

Students will no longer have to wait for an available computer to work on their projects. This will motivate them to complete their coursework so that they can use the extra time for their projects. Having access to innovative technology will certainly give them the edge that they need to compete in middle and high school. This is the bridge that will take them to "the places they will go"!
