Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Benjamin Franklin said it best, "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." This year, I am teaching seventh grade social studies and seventh grade English language arts. This is my first year teaching these curriculums and I have no materials to use with my students besides the basic classroom textbook.

My school is a Title I school which means we have been identified as needing extra assistance and support from the federal government.

Most of my students are at-risk of failing New York State exams and come from low-income homes. I teach students with disabilities in a self-contained setting. Most of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs) and struggle with reading and writing in English. Despite the day-to-day obstacles they come across, they stay positive and continue to work hard in school. My students aim to please and go above and beyond what is expected of them.

My Project

My students read well below grade level; as a result, I need to provide them with multiple texts that are at various reading levels. Some of the resources that I asked for will be used to supplement the classroom textbook that is almost obsolete due to its high reading level. Furthermore, my students learn best through projects and hands-on activities. My students enjoy tasks that ask them to draw, build and create! The more choice that I provide for my students in the classroom, the more likely that they will succeed in school. These materials will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of my students! I am requesting hands-on manipulatives that have realistic social studies props and high-interest reading passages. I am asking for historical photo packs, colorful maps, charts and reproducible social studies activities. I also asked for markers and reusable write and wipe pockets for students to use when analyzing document-based questions.

I do my best to provide as much as I can for my students but I feel that it is never enough.

This year, more than ever, I feel that my students will suffer without the support of donations through this project. These materials will be used throughout the school year and are so desperately needed to ensure student growth and achievement.
