Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The Cat in the Hat" movie peaked an interest in other Dr. Seuss books. The "Listen, Read, & Rhyme with Dr. Seuss" books and CDs will help my dual language learners. Can you imagine trying to listen to a story and the headphones won't work or are tangled up, or the cassette won't rewind, or worse, gets stuck?

The population at our school consists of mainly second language learners and come from low-income families.

95% of our students receive free or reduced meals. My kindergarten students have a desire to learn and ability to grow. No matter what kind of background the children of our community come from, they are willing to give it their all to learn something new. In my classroom, you will find students whose English language is not very strong and are still working on learning their own language, but even when that seems a great challenge they also bring to the table with them many hardships. We often have parents whose literacy skills are quite low and whose time is extremely limited. So few of my students are able to hear their favorite books read in fluent, expressive and native Spanish, much less in English. That's not to say that our parents are not concerned about the education of their child, on the contrary, we have excellent turnout when parent meetings or workshops are held.

My Project

My students need Dr. Seuss (Eng. & Span.) audio books, a CD& cassette player/recorder, and a wireless classroom headphones set to update a favorite literacy center. These resources will help update the listening center. The students will greatly benefit from this project because they will be able to increase engagement in working with two languages, improve listening skills, improve reading comprehension, learn basic sight words, identify story elements, show responsibility, be independent readers and connect reading and writing as they follow along with the narrated CDs. Listening to books provides a model of what fluent Spanish or English reading sounds like and exposes them to rich vocabulary and language. In the listening center, two or more students can listen to a single book at the same time. Not only is it engaging and fun, but students take responsibility for their learning and become active learners. It is amazing how focused and motivated students are when they put on headphones to listen to a favorite book. All students love to be read to, later they learn to read, then they become lifelong readers.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know.

The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” -- Dr. Seuss. I'd like that for my students when they learn to read. They may not travel to far-off places, but reading takes them places only their imagination can take them. With your donation, the new books will help my students develop a love of stories while building their understanding. The Dr. Seuss books were suggested by previous students for this year's students.
