My Project

Every year, we encourage our students to read self-selected novels for 30 minutes during silent reading time as well as other times throughout the day when they finish their assigned work. My goal as a third grade teacher is to spark an interest in books so students will start to read more on their own, leading to increased reading comprehension, more advanced writing skills, a more sophisticated vocabulary, and greater empathy for others. However, we are often hampered by a limited or outdated selection of books through our HMH Curriculum, making it much more difficult to entice reluctant readers to give books a chance. The challenge for many teachers is to inspire their students to open a book, immerse themselves in the story, and learn to love reading and the pursuit of knowledge. The biggest impact that Covid had on my class is that they totally missed out on having preschool, which is a foundation for students to learn beginning pre-reading skills if they don’t experience them at home and by 1st grade it was very apparent which children had been exposed to prereading skills and read to and which had not. The students who were read to thrived and those who didn’t were in a state of playing catch up.In first grade, they were read to every day and the level of retaining and applying reading skills throughout the first 17 books in the Magic Treehouse series ignited the passion to read the chapter books on their own. This class had over 95% of the students moved to second grade as on grade level readers or above. The same class is also moving into 3rd Grade with over 95% of the students reading on grade level are above.
