This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! Dr. Seuss said these great lines, but unfortunately for some of my students they will not have the opportunity to see "great sights, or to join the high fliers who soar to high heights"...

I teach in a high poverty area where street gangs and drug dealers run rampant.

Many of my students have witnessed things that most other six year old children wouldn't dream about. 83% of our students receive free or reduced lunch in comparison to the state average of 52%. Many of these students also come from single parent families. 92% of our students speak Spanish as their first language. So as you can see from this brief snapshot, many of my students face incredible challenges in their lives and they are only in the first grade... Now enough of the gloom and doom, let me tell you a little bit about these crazy, energetic, little rays of sunshine that I like to call my little panda family. My students are incredibly smart and thoughtful. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't have a smile on my face, and I do mean everyday! These kids deserve the very best in life, yes they do have a mountain of obstacles in their way, I just want to give them the tools they need to climb it.

My Project

The tool that many of my students will need to be "the best of the best" is TECHNOLOGY! In my classroom I already have an ELMO document camera which is a wonderful learning tool. In addition, I also have an ELMO tablet. Unfortunately, I am missing one vital piece of the puzzle, a COMPUTER! Without a lap top my document camera is just an over-rated projector. As far as my magnificent tablet goes it's still sitting in the box, never been opened. With a new laptop I would be able to take my teaching to the next level, with interactive lessons, virtual field trips, engaging slide shows and animations, the possibilities would be endless! Instead of being trapped behind my projector at the front of the class, I would have the ability to walk around during lessons and check for understanding immediately. My students are excited when they get to visit the computer lab once a week. I can only imagine the excitement they would feel if we had this technology in our classroom.

Having this vital piece of the puzzle would give my students access to the technology that they so desperately need to be successful in today's society.

It also gives me the ability to meet the needs of all of my students. Having a laptop would greatly impact my teaching and therefore would give my 25 students the tools they need to climb any mountain. Today is your day; please help my students so that they can be off to Great Places!
