Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from the heart of Bedstuy, Brooklyn. When they walk through the school doors, they walk in with a smile ready to learn, leaving everything else at the door. My students can be found enthralled in a book, discussing their wonderings and new things they have learned. Our school is comprised of students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles. We strive to provide high quality education for all our students.

We firmly believe that every child has capabilities, talents, and strengths; sometimes, all it takes is exposure or motivation and the right mindset.

The students in my class continually make an effort to improve in all aspects.

My class consists of 20 amazing students.

Of those 20, three are English learners. They all have a positive attitude and strive to do their personal best to contribute to our classroom community.

My Project

Even a small increase in daily reading practice could make a huge difference for all my students. Every day for 30 minutes, in addition to the 30 minutes of independent reading, they will engage with these books, purposefully matched to their needs. Guided reading provides equitable differentiated reading instruction to all students (ELL, special needs, struggling, and advanced readers). Alongside their peers who have the same needs, with my prompting and each others support, they productively struggle together towards mastery. These skills they develop will then be practiced in the class independently and at home. These books will provide my students with the opportunity to use higher-order thinking, either through the questions they provoke or the tasks that they lend themselves to, in turn promoting greater reading growth.

My students hopes and dreams are to become better readers, the guiding reading books will help them attain those hopes and those dreams.

Guided reading is an approach for all readers, independent or striving and has three purposes: meet the needs of students to enable them to excel in their reading abilities, to instruct students how to read difficult and varying texts while understanding and being fluent readers, to understand unfamiliar concepts or ideas and to produce meaning of the text by using reading strategies to identify unknown words (Laquinta, 2006).

They already have the determination. Now all they need are the tools. Oh the reading levels they will grow!
