My Students

I am an itinerant teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and work in multiple schools. My students have one disadvantage in common no matter their grade or age - a hearing difference or a hearing loss. My students range in ability from far below grade level to above grade level. They are in different classroom settings including, self-contained special education classes, duel language class, general education, collaborative team classes, and worksites.

My students all have listening technology: hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Though they are all different, they all benefit from visual aids. They rely on visual support to comprehend their daily lessons, especially with the push towards the Common Core Standards. The noisy classroom environment and poor acoustics make learning even more difficult for my students. Many of them are from low income families and do not have access to computers or tablets on a daily basis, either at home or at school. They are continuously asking to use technology that is just not available to them, and therefore are missing out on the amazing educational opportunities that an iPad can offer.

My Project

Technology is a valuable tool. My students and I would like an iPad, case (and Apple Care) to improve my students' auditory comprehension and auditory memory. I will facilitate this learning with iPad hands-on application. With these apps, I can help them to become more successful learners. I travel from school to school so the small compact iPad is perfect for this teacher on the move.

The iPad would allow my students instant access to their classroom content.

The iPad will be a fun and motivating learning opportunity from picture communications, phonics, books, spelling, drawing and so much more!

All of my students love to interact with technology.

There are such a variety of apps that will support all of their auditory needs. In addition, students with emerging skills can support communication and behavior. This technology is so important because most of my students do not have access to this technology in their homes. They know people will be donating and they are grateful to be recipients!
