My Students

Steps to getting into college, for English Language Learners: 1. Master English--check! 2. Pass all of your state exams--check! 3. Sign up for Advanced Placement courses--check! 4. Read college level texts--not yet! Help my students get the materials they need to access the education they deserve!

My students prove that it is never too late to learn.

They come from countries like the Dominican Republic and Mexico, where many of them did not receive formal education. As newcomers to the country, they worked harder than typical high school students in order to prove that they could go to college at the same time as their native English speaking peers. This year our first graduating class of seniors will leave the bilingual halls of our school to enter colleges big and small, where people will not know the struggles--academic, emotional, and otherwise--they have faced as immigrants. I want all of my students to hold their heads high and know that they have received an education that allows them to provide for their families, build a stronger and more diverse U.S., and prove that hard work and intelligence really do go hand in hand.

My Project

There a few things more prestigious on a high school transcript than an Advanced Placement course. College Board approves the syllabus and materials for each Advanced Placement course, to guarantee that students across the country are receiving rigorous courses that will prepare them for college. For students who have only recently mastered the English language, accessing a college level textbook is accessing an educational world they did not know they could enter. Government in America: People, Politics, and Policy is full of political cartoons, tables, charts, and historical photographs that bring the subject matter to life and make it more accessible to English Language Learners. The paperback version of the text will allow my students to bring it home--something that many of my students have never had the opportunity to do. I can already hear my students debating issues like immigration, students' rights, and welfare as they gain background knowledge from the text.

My students are so close to going out into the "real world," and I want them to go with the knowledge of what makes a good citizen.

Even though my students are new to the country, they are eager to learn more about its government and political process so that they can one day take part in it. This class and these books will give them a new appreciation for what it means to be an American.
