This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a high poverty neighborhood in north Philadelphia. Many of them move frequently between Philadelphia and Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. A majority of them are also English Language Learners who are fluent in Spanish. I love getting to both teach and learn from my students in both languages.

My students are passionate mathematicians when given real-world problems to solve, and as they gain confidence in their abilities throughout the year, they love being able to share their work with classmates and explain their mathematical thinking.

My Project

My students are beginning to enter into complex mathematical operations, and Common Core standards require them to explain and justify their thinking. We have a projector and a SmartBoard in our classroom, but students sometimes struggle with utilizing the finicky technology (and even reaching the board for my shorter students). By the time I've coached each student on how to either use the SmartBoard pen or had them copy their work from scratch on the board, we've often lost our momentum and engagement in the problem.

A document camera would allow them to quickly show their work on the actual workbook page to classmates, explaining their thinking.

We could quickly and efficiently compare different problem-solving methods. Students who are visual thinkers and students with less English proficiency, can more quickly see and understand their classmates' work, rather than just hearing a verbal explanation. We will be able to compare strategies and help each other master multiple ways to solve problems.
