My Students

Close your eyes and listen as the book comes to life! A listening center will help aid the needs of my students on their road to becoming lifelong readers. They love to hear books read aloud but for many of these inner city children, school is the only place where this need can be met.

My students are eager Kindergarteners ready to learn to read.

Our school is located in an inner city/high poverty level neighborhood. For many of them this is their first time in any formal educational setting. They come seeking to learn new things everyday.

My Project

Do you remember sitting on mom's knee listening to stories like "Little Red Riding Hood" or "Goldilocks and the Three Bears?" For many of the students I teach, that is not an experience they have shared with their mom. But imagine small children sitting in a group laughing and smiling while listening to a story on CD. At this time, I do not have any materials for a listening center to make that vision a reality. Therefore, the donation of the books set, CD player and wireless headphones would be an awesome asset to our classroom. I chose to request the wireless headphones because of the limited space in our classroom. These headphones will allow the students to listen to the books without the need to sit in a small confined space. The listening center will provide students with multiple opportunities to listen to standard English and will help improved their reading fluency and expression. This daily practice will help my students become proficient readers.

Donating to this project is essential to helping young children become lifelong readers.

Listening to good literature read in standard English will also provided these students opportunities to grow in not only reading, but writing, math, and social studies as well.
