Like Dr Seuss says- Oh the places you'll go - that is what I want to instill in my high school students and our elementary school reading buddies. All students have the opportunity to go to college. We, as educators, need to open the right doors for our students so they see that college is an option.
My students are high school students and our reading buddies are third grade students who are in an inner city school system in Kentucky.
The schools are considered schools in crisis as 85% are on free and reduced lunches. From data gathered 6% come from homes that parents have any college experience. The schools have a mixed population with 50% white and 50% African American approximately. The elementary school that we mentor (we are big buddies to) has a similar student makeup.
My Project
Our school has dedicated itself to providing a college readiness program for our students. We provide weekly activities for the students to get them college ready. We provide guest speakers, college visits, information session. We have added many resource books to our library on college life and the college experience. We are also trying to incorporate what the high school students learn about college into our mentoring program with the elementary students. One resource we would like to use with the elementary students is a set of books called "C is for College". This book gives basic introductory information on the college experience that will benefit all students.
All students should have the opportunity to experience college and follow their dreams.
We, as educators, need to help students realize that college is possible and expose them early on to what college is and the benefits of going to college.
