My Project

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is important and a priority in today's teaching landscape.

One of the first places to start the new school year is in creating and facilitating moments of connection in your classroom.

Social connection improves physical health and psychological well-being. The first weeks of school are the perfect time to create moments of connection and camaraderie because it's a time when everyone’s anxiety and vulnerability is at a similar level. During those first weeks especially, everyone is longing for friendship. In order to facilitate these moments of connection, I am looking for colored wooden blocks for a getting to know you activity that can also be used throughout the year in a variety of ways. Working in small groups, students will pull a colored block and have to answer a question based on the color he/she pulled. For example, if a student moves a yellow block, he/she has to answer a question in the yellow category. (For example- What is one thing you are really good at?). Next, jigsaw puzzles allow students to work collaboratively and improve their focus and attention span. Puzzles also offer the opportunity to problem solve, practice social skills, and increase spatial awareness. Lastly, the website Teachers Pay Teachers offers an abundance of teacher created social-emotional resources such as games, lesson plans, printables, digital activities and more. A gift card to this website will allow me to purchase resources to support laying the foundation for positive learning environments. Fun exercises such as these games, puzzles, & resources help foster connection, belonging, and a sense of community. SEL can also give its students the framework to develop healthy self esteem, improve their mental health by reducing depression and stress. Additionally, social-emotional learning equips students to engage in an increasingly multicultural environment.
