Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a small Title 1 high school in Long Island City. We are an un-screened school that admits a broad range of diverse students from all five of NYC's great boroughs. Due to the students' hard work and the dedication that the teachers and administration show every day, our graduation, college attendance and college readiness rates far exceed the citywide average.

Our hardworking students strive to succeed in the Big Apple.

The vibe throughout my school is relaxed, friendly and close-knit. Students and administrators are on a first-name basis, and we pay close attention to students' needs. Working with these kids is one of the greatest joys in my life!

My Project

Having a laser pointer and automatic clicker will allow me to circulate through out the room during a lesson instead of being tied to the computer to maneuver from slide to slide. Circulation is imperative in ensuring students, special education and general education, have the attention of the teacher when they need it. With the clicker I will be able to check in more often on the students who need it most during a lesson ensuring they are on task and learning.

The students in my classroom see the space as a second home.Posting their work in the classroom helps give them a sense of ownership, not only in the classroom, but also in their education.

Seeing their work on the walls gives them a sense of pride. I like to hang up academic work and creative work.Instead of using tape which can damage the dry erase boards, magnets are a safe way to display their work to the class and it allow me to return the student work to the student without the work being damaged. I hope that they keep this work for years to come because they are that proud of it.

The students have a great deal of pride in our classroom.I have alternate seating which includes a woven mat on the floor and three bean bag chairs. Having a vacuum will allow us to keep these items clean so they can be used for years to come. We also do creative projects which sometimes get messy. The students like to make sure that they are not leaving a mess for the next class, so the vacuum will ensure that they are leaving their space as good as, or better than it was given to them.
