Odd Ones Out

My students need 2 copies each of 11 inspirational books, like "Of Thee I Sing" and "50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet," to help them understand that they can speak up and speak out for everyone, including themselves.

My Students

It's hard being a kid - or at least that's the way it seems for a lot of kids who feel like they don't fit in. Those students who are part of the "in-crowd", sometimes feel tempted to poke fun at others. And most students, at some time or other, ponder how they can make the world a better place.

I teach 25 fourth grade students.

They have a never-ending thirst for books and learning new things. They are a very diverse group of students, as their families come from all over the globe. In fact, a recent survey showed that my students speak approximately 25 different languages combined! With such a variety of different backgrounds, it is important to have everyone respect cultural differences and understand that we don't all have to be the same or like the same things.

My Project

Theodor Geisel and Albert Einstein were both considered "odd", yet they went on to become valuable members of society. There are many other stories just like theirs. While their hearts are in the right places, it is sometimes hard for students to "be the change they want to see". In other words, they need a little guidance on how to make the best of the world around them. They need books with positive role-models to discourage the urge to make fun of others, and to let them understand that even little acts of kindness can make a difference.

Our school's library is in the process of being overhauled and we have a limited amount of resources.

Having books that show students that they have the ability to make the world a better place will help to improve our school environment, cut down on bullying, and hopefully have a positive impact in our local society. In addition to reading these books with my class, I intend to offer them to other teachers in my school so that their students can also benefit.
