My Students

Most of my students are avid readers. However, my reluctant readers are still in search of that perfect book to change their lives. I strive to create a library that supports the needs of each type of student I teach. After reading Dear Martin, engaging with my students about the book and meeting the author, Nic Stone, I knew I had to find a way to support her latest book, Odd One Out. Since Nic will be visiting our school in October, ideally every student will have access to her book.

My Project

A good book can change a student's outlook on reading. Most students don't enjoy reading because they don't know what they like or haven't connected with a book. 8th grade year is the hardest at ICS because students are pushed to read more than they ever have before.

My class visited Nic Stone at the library and she gave us free copies of her first book, Dear Martin.

My students willingly read about and analyzed police brutality as a result of reading her story. Ms. Stone has agreed to visit ICS and I would like to purchase her new book, Odd One Out, and have my students engage in conversation with her about reading and writing. To prepare them for her visit, I have doubled their required reading time (from 15 minutes a day to 30 minutes daily) and they must write weekly about the book they are reading. Additionally, they are still being held accountable for writing their high school essays and completing written reflections on Hispanic Heritage Month. Holding students to high expectations is the hardest part of my job and I look forward to my students meeting this new challenge!
