My Students

How does a child explore the depths of the ocean in the middle of Washington, DC? Transform the classroom! These materials will help make portions of our Think Tank lab into an ocean, allowing our youngest STEM-lovers to explore the science of the ocean in dramatic play and center-based activities.

My program serves a diverse group of PS through 5th graders in Northeast Washington, DC.

Our DC Public School is one that truly values inquiry and learning by doing and our students continue to rise to our expectations every day. From the youngest preschool student to the oldest 5th grade student, all receive science instruction in the classroom and practice in Habits of Mind using their Multiple Intelligences in our Think Tank program. Our unique school is a special one, with over 368 unique and eager learners who thrive on hands-on, inquiry-based learning. This specific request is for our youngest learners, Preschool through Kindergarten, reaching approximately 150 students.

My Project

Early childhood students learn best through hands-on exploration of concepts and what better way to get them excited about the vast ocean than to allow them to explore it! We will use these materials, to turn an area of my room into an ocean, covering the walls with ocean themed decals, student work and blue "water". The floor will be the seafloor where students can explore in submarines and the ceiling will be the top of the water. While "in the ocean" students will have many tactile items to play with and observe: seashells, sand, and various sea animals. While at centers in the rest of the room, students will be able to master important STEM concepts such as classifying, sorting and close observation using the fishing rods, fish builders, sand and more. This space will truly become one where students start to build a love of the ocean and get excited about learning more about it.

Many students have not had the opportunity to visit the ocean, let alone the depths of it!

However, when students voted on what they wanted to learn about most, oceans and ocean creatures were at the top of my students' interest list! This project will provide my students with important background knowledge and stimulate their curiosity about the ocean, which will propel them to succeed in upper grades studies later on.
