My Students

The special education and general education students at my school live in a high need area, and every moment with them counts. It helps to shape their minds, personalities, and motivation to continue to be successful in school. These children try so hard every day, and while they face many struggles both inside and outside of the classroom, they are resilient.

The smile on their faces when they come into school is priceless.

They look forward to coming every day, and I want to give them something special every chance I get.

My Project

While we do have some supplies in the Occupational Therapy room, we have definitely learned to be creative with the materials we have. We can probably think of about 20 activities with each supply that we are asking for, each furthering the student's development in a different way.

The main thing we are lacking is puzzles.

Puzzles are such an important tool for children to learn to use their problem solving skills. This teaches them not to give up, to try different things when something doesn't work out, and to analyze a picture and act based on it. The cognitive skills that students learn from completing new puzzles can be carried over into the classroom. Currently, we use printed and laminated paper to create our own puzzles, but it would be amazing to have some actual puzzle manipulative to motivate the children.

Additionally, we are requesting many different fine motor activities including the number peg boards and the "Feed the Monkey Game." Fine motor skills needs to develop in order to allow students to participate in school tasks such as handwriting, buttoning/ zipping jackets, eating using utensils and even using math manipulatives during lessons.

Every single supply that has been requested will help students of all grade levels and all types of special needs. For example, my students will use the learning numbers magnetic boards to learn the value of numbers, while working on their pencil grasp. They will use the wipe and write letter formation stickers to practice writing their letters with proper formation to allow for efficient writing. We appreciate any help we can get to provide the best therapy service to our students.
