Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are Occupational Therapists who work in an AMAZING, SMALL, DIVERSE public elementary school in Harlem, N.Y.C. We work with over 50 students, ranging from kindergarten to the 5th grade with a variety of unique diagnosis – For example, Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, and other miscellanies learning disabilities.

The majority of our students are from low-income/high poverty households - Despite the challenges they face, the students look forward to coming to school where we provide a nurturing environment and help them receive the support that they need.

With that said, we are always striving for ways to help enhance the students learning experience. The Occupational Therapy department collaborates with teachers on a daily basis to adapt the classroom and teach strategies to address the student’s sensory needs; ultimately helping the students to focus more efficiently and promote a comfortable learning environment.

My Project

Sensory issues can create both learning and behavioral issues as some children are overwhelmed by stimuli that others view as harmless. We are requesting various tools that will be used during Occupational Therapy sessions to help train the students to become more independent and functional in the school environment. The tools that we are requesting will be used in close collaboration with the teachers to help adapt the school environment for the students specific /individual needs so they can engage more efficiently and actively participate, ultimately perform better in school activities.

Students need the sensory tools in order to calm their bodies and get all of their emotions out so they can stabilize themselves so they’re ready to learn and they’re happy.

Some examples of how the tools requested will help the students are as follows: Weighted materials - Many children find that something weighted helps them soothe themselves or organize sensory input. Seating modifications: Some students have modifications to their seating. They may sit on a cushion that provides them with tactile and proprioceptive input as they move. Some sit on a wobble chair or a specially designed bouncing ball chair instead of a traditional one. They use a weighted lap pad or have resistance bands attached to the legs of their chairs. Some other tools: Many children benefit from fidgets or tactile materials such as clay or silly putty.... Due to space limitations, all tools can not be described in detail but hopefully you get the concept.

Thank you in advance for your consideration! Every contribution helps us get one step closer to giving our AMAZING students the tools they need to help them function and ultimately thrive in the school environment.
