Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEP and ELL learners and special education students such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic not only were the kids wanting to come back but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

One of my favorite traditions as a family is visiting the Christmas in Rockefeller Center. The details that go into each tree help to foster and celebrate diversity around the world which helps to develop such an appreciation for the many different cultures in our world.

Can you imagine a classroom filled with miniature lit Christmas trees celebrating diversity from all around the world representing a variety of cultures?

My students are from all around the world representing many different countries including the Philippines, India, Poland, Mexico, Ukraine, and many more! We truly have a diverse classroom and I want my students to learn about their culture and celebrate what makes them special and unique.

Help me give my students individual trees both green and white so they can choose which style best represents their culture. My students will also need a variety of cultural decorations such as lights, flags, and cutouts of kids around the world. My students will create a blueprint on how they want to design their trees to reflect their culture proudly.

This year our celebration is going to look different since we are in-person and remote learning, but as students present their trees, I will create a mixtape and showcase our virtual museum on Flipgrid! Please help us get ornaments, lights, candy cane, flags, and many more to help students decorate their tree.

What a joy it would be to help my students celebrate their diversity in creating a miniature version of the Christmas Around the World trees that are displayed each year. Thank you for helping to light up our classroom with knowledge and appreciation for one another's culture!
