NYC Teens Create Calming Space With Classroom Garden

Help me give my students a calm garden corner, where they can use a shelf with a grow light, seedling heat mat, and seeds and soil to grow herbs, salad greens, tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers.

My Project

The children who enter my classroom come from all over NYC. As such, they carry with them a wealth of knowledge that contributes to a dynamic classroom.

However, sometimes life becomes a bit hectic and they need a calming space to help them slow down, unwind, relax, and connect with nature.

Gardening and caring for plants, from seedlings to maturity, provides the perfect solution! My students and I will build the shelving unit, and add our grow lights and heat mats that we will use to sprout and care for our seedlings. I will teach my inner-city teens to sow, grow, care for, transplant, grow some more, and harvest the literal fruits of their labor. Together, my students and I will carve out our little slice of heaven, right in the middle of our classroom, in the heart of New York City!
