My Students

My school is a small but hard working school in Queens, NY. Many of our students come from low income homes and do not have access to technology at home. The students are from a diverse backgrounds and many are English Language Learners, 42% as of 2019.

Our school's computer lab does not have the equipment needed to teach Computer Science concepts like algorithms and debugging.

Of course paper based work could be done, but what fun is that in the computer lab? The opportunity for students to learn algorithms through the use of robotics or have the ability to use new equipment would be a valuable experience for them, especially those that are ELL and Special Education students. There are programs and resources such as Botley and coding robots. Many of the students with special needs could benefit from the practice of "input" and "output" strategies of coding/programming as well as the collaboration.

My Project

As part of the NYC CS For All initiative, I am hoping to implement new advanced Computer Science Lessons and units that will provide my students with a competitive advantage when entering Middle School, High School, and when choosing career paths.

I plan to use these five robot kits in Grades 3-5, which accounts for approximately 450 students.

Each class has 32 students, I plan on pairing the students up into groups of 3- students. Each student will have a designated role, such as the programmer, maze runner, debugger, ect.

These robots will help students understand the concept of algorithms through the use of coding program sequences for robots. These robots will provide a valuable experience for tactile, ELL, and Special Education Students.
