My Students

Most of us have seen the commercials encouraging parents to improve their children's health by changing what and how they eat at home. I believe another important component of this move to a nutritious lifestyle can be accomplished through education and exposure to new foods right here at school.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. For various reasons, the majority of my students have limited access to diverse foods. As four-year-olds, they are still open to trying new things, especially with the support and encouragement of teachers and peers. Instructional materials that highlight nutritious foods will enhance the appeal of these new food adventures.

My Project

The Multi-Ethnic Foods and Fruits/Vegetables Puzzles will allow students to view and practice the names of new foods. The Nutrition Mystery Lotto and Fruits & Vegetables Memory Match Game are fun ways to reinforce nutritional foods with friends. The Bilingual Food Photo Cards and Daily Routine Teaching Cards can be used in whole group lessons and small group activities to sort and categorize the various foods by different attributes. The Food Stamps will provide further reinforcement. Children will learn about food groups and daily servings via the Food Pyramid Mat Activities. Students can utilize the Magnetic Sorting Board and Magnetic Healthy Foods Placemat at one of three classroom magnet boards. These are sure to be high-interest activities as my young learners are always captivated by the 'magic' of magnets. Finally, in an effort to create a healthy learning environment, we request a basic vacuum cleaner.

The more encounters my students have with nutritious foods, the likelier they are to seek out and enjoy a healthy diet.

Tasting new foods is one way, but games, puzzles, and other fun food-related activities can only help encourage them to be adventurous eaters.
