Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Ever seen students lock their phones, pick up their heads, and look around, only to see that everyone else is on their phones so they unlock their phones again? I see this quite often, especially during lunch. For those students who are looking for ways to interact with their friends and peers without using their phones, chess could bridge those kindred spirits who are looking for something competitive, something friendly, and something intellectually stimulating.

By providing students an area for chess — whether in the cafeteria, at the library, or as an extracurricular activity — students can not only enjoy the game of chess but also try to take it seriously in order to compete across NYC through chess programs such as Chess in the Schools.
