My Project

Middle school students deserve access to the arts to develop visual arts skills, allow for creative personal expression and to experience how the arts can combat stress. This is the third year I have offered a visual arts elective at my large urban middle school. My primary role at my school is to teach 7th grade U.S. history, but have developed an arts elective course. With a student body of almost 1,000 students my school faces challenges in equal access to the arts, for instance we only have 1 full time art educator. So while I love planning my elective curriculum and the energy my students bring, the challenge faced is not being given art supplies or a budget.

This year these supplies will help build my newest sketching unit where students are focusing on nature observational drawing skills and connecting that to the human built environment.

We will be enjoying time outdoors around our Brooklyn neighborhood to improve our ability to sketch what we see in our natural and built surroundings.

Additionally, my requested supplies will help my students in another unit where we explore personal emotion and the element of color. The watercolor paper and pencils will help my students use painting and collage to express the power of emotion. Students will use paint to explore their own emotions and feelings conveyed through lessons that target social emotional learning discussions. Our goal is to showcase our final color and emotion artworks in the library for others in our community to experience.

By supporting my project, you are truly helping the imaginations and skills of my 7th graders begin to thrive. Some students will take this creative energy and bring it to their high school careers and beyond, we can't continue to deny them equal access to the arts.
