Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? A review of student grades and school-wide data indicate that students with struggling in high school will have a desire to give up and drop out.

The students in my classroom are students with challenges in testing and performing clinical skills.

Many of them have chosen our school of vocation to obtain a certification to be employed in the medical industry. My classes serve students with a range of learning disabilities, emotional frustration, and poor test takers. The typical student in my class has a challenge understanding the critical thinking aspect in the medical field. We are a Title I school meaning the majority of the students are on free or reduced lunch. A majority of the students work to support or aid in the family structure. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent in our student population.

My department budget is $451 for over 100 students. My classrooms are dilapidated, textbooks are outdated and technology is being updated to the core classes. Vocational teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction without the requisite tools to teach the students.

My Project

Students will be using the CPR Manikins for CPR certification. Keri Manikin will help the students a clinical lab to practice the skills needed for certification. The students in the Medical Academy will benefit from the manikins in preparing them for the workforce. The new CPR Manikins will provide a knowledge to the students on performing appropriate Basic Life Support to save a life. Employers in the medical industry require this certification for employment. The Keri Manikin will allow the Nursing students clinical skills practice lab.

Nursing students are required to learn 24 patient skills for their license examination.

Student proposals for new medical models are incomplete if they are unable to complete CPR and practice their nursing skills. The finished product will allow them to practice skills with proper equipment as close to life form, and complete CPR to save a life. The completion of the skills and CPR are tangible for these students. They will receive a CPR card and Nursing Assistant License.

This fulfilled project would significantly help my students' attain employment in the medical field. They will see the process connect to a final product, relevant to themselves and impacting the world for better. Students can practice using basic activities skills in the geriatric population and experience these skills in the clinical setting. This will expose the students to the rewarding field of Nursing. In the end, they will be problem-solvers, empowered to take the skills and knowledge in their class to improve their lives and those of people around them.
