This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have about 45 students total ranging from grades 3-5. I see the students in small groups for about 25-30 minutes 3-5 times a week During this time, the students receive special attention in a 1:6 ratio. All the instruction they receive is directly catered to their needs in mathematics.

The majority of my students are English Language Learners and on free or reduced lunch.

All of them are a year or more below grade level in math and not passing the standardized tests. With that said, they still have a passion to learn! They are energetic and positive students. While they may put up a front at first, once you peel away the layers, they are dying to be challenged!

My Project

My first unit will be a Number Sense unit. It is the unit that sets the foundation for everything that follows! Students will gain a deeper understanding of numbers, their place value, and composing and decomposing numbers. The ten base set will allow my students to understand place value. They will be able to decompose and compose numbers. The materials will help with understanding regrouping and borrowing. Taking 10 from tens place so that they can subtract in the ones place will actually make sense to them! Additionally, my students need these materials so that the short amount of time is used as efficiently as possible. I will be sitting with them at a table and demonstrating what they will be learning on the teacher board. Meanwhile, students will have their own boards to work out problems, display their answers on, and use the magnetic manipulatives to work out problems. Students will feel ownership over the work because they have their own set of materials to use!

Right now I don't have the materials for my small group sessions to be successful.

Nor do the students have workbooks that show them how to use the manipulatives for learning. The materials will allow me to do my job and educate these children! Students are always willing to learn with a dry erase board in their hands and tangible objects they can move around! Please donate to this project so my students have the minimum supplies they need to be successful.
