My Students

Our school corporation is a rural district, trying to equip our students with the skills and experiences to be successful in our ever-changing world. I have the privilege to teach first grade, in our small rural district.

My first grade students are excited about the world around them.

As their teacher, it is my goal to create opportunities to make them curious about the world around them. My goal is to empower them to ask questions and find answers. My students are world changers.

My Project

I am requesting materials to help my students develop the basis of financial literacy: number sense. Number sense essentially refers to a student's “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001).

A student must have a sense of what numbers mean, understand their relationship to one another, be able to perform mental math, understand symbolic representations, and use those numbers in real world situations.

If I am truly to give students an understanding of financial literacy, then I must first help them develop their number sense.

I am requesting a variety of materials that will help students count collections. I plan on creating a counting collection corner, where students have access to these materials, and are able to manipulate the items into groups of five, ten, and twenty-five. This will build on their understanding of coins. I am also requesting a book and a moon bank, to help students understand the value of spending, saving, and investing!
