My Students

The students in my classes are active, hard working, eager, and love to get their hands in the dirt. My belief is that many children of this generation are not outdoors enough. In addition, many do not understand the importance of healthy food. With our gardens, both of these issues are addressed - and the best part? The kids love it!

The students literally beg to use their recess to hunt for caterpillars, pick tomatoes, pull weeds, or water roses.

Because we don't have time during our busy academic day, I created an after school club called, "Hands in the Dirt Club". We meet every Monday to maintain one of our six school gardens; The Cedar, Cedar Blooms, Ronell's Rose Garden, The Three Sisters, Empathy Way, and Emily's Isle.

Emily's Isle was created after our school lost one of our 8th grade students to cancer. This new project will provide the needed bark nuggets that will help keep the many new plants - from plumeria to hibiscus, to rose, to lavander - beautiful and healthy.

My Project

Our school has a large planter in the center of campus. We recently took out the old overgrown bushes and weeds and replaced them with beautiful flowering drought tolerant plants.

Our goal is to help these new plants thrive and grow by applying mulch and bark to the area.

Garden bark nuggets regulate soil temperature and helps control moisture. It also will reduce water use.

The bark's light brown color creates a decorative ground cover, that will add visual appeal to this planter. This planted area is extra special because it is home to a tree that was planted in memory of an 8th grader that lost her battle with cancer this year.
