Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most school buildings were constructed in the 1960's, and believe it or not, most of the furniture hasn't been replaced since then, either! Our chairs are breaking, and becoming a safety hazard. We need to be able to learn safely!

I work in one of Boston's public schools, with a population 94% below the poverty line and 85% non-English speaking.

As teachers, our task becomes to advocate for learning, and find as many ways as possible to bring learning to life for the students. In this world of high-interest technology and over-stimulating media, the task gets even harder to get students interested. Add to that, the lack of safe, sturdy and child-sized furniture, and it gets even harder.

My Project

Currently, I have scavenged whatever chairs I could find around the building. They are in various stages of broken-ness. Not to mention the fact that they are all different sizes--something like the cottage of the 3 bears! Some are too small, some are too big, and only a few are just right! By acquiring these stools, I can use them at my guided reading table, allowing the chairs currently there to be student chairs at their seats.

I am sure you can imagine how how it is for a child to concentrate on learning if they are busy trying to safely balance on a broken chair!

The last thing I want is for any child to get hurt in the classroom, so I end up throwing away at least 2 chairs every year as they become unsafe. These stools would help our classroom be a safe and comfortable place to learn!
