Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm a Media Specialist at a K-8 center in South Florida. Every day, our 8 middle school library aides make a 5 to 10 minute announcement video, comprised of various photos and videos shot around school / in our 'TV studio' (actually, a storage cupboard). This year, a parent gave us a cloth, Irish green in color, that we have draped over some boxes in the storage area to create a green screen. The aides have proved incredibly creative with the screen. They started simply using it for background pictures behind the presenters, then they learned to incorporate background videos, to make the green screen segments grow / shrink, to travel across the screen, to vary the opacity of the figures in the foreground... they seem to come up with something new every week. I would like to acquire some accessories for the green screen that will enable the students to play and learn more video techniques.

We need your help because about 85% of our students come from households with below average income.

Most are first-generation Americans whose parents come from the Caribbean / Central or South America. Their parents tend to work in low-paying jobs in the tourism industry. We do not have an affluent PTA to assist us!

Next year, we plan to offer video production classes to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. There would be approximately 10 students in each group. I would love to see what new video effects these students would dream up if we presented them with tee shirts, hoods and gloves, exactly the same color as the green screen. They could project images onto their bodies, have images floating across the screen, borne by invisible hands, and also appear as floating heads... Please help our kids learn a new set of tricks!
