My Project

Eighth-grade Math and Science Academy students, whom I team teach with Karina Lozano, are brilliant readers and terrific critical thinkers. They analyze and infer extremely well and draw meaningful conclusions about the world. Texts that interest and motivate them lead to incredible conversations and deep critical thinking, helping our students to be immensely successful scholars. The Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi is one such book.

The Children of Blood and Bone will engage, hook, and empower our students.

It will help us explore state standards in a meaningful and compelling way, emphasizing representation, diversity, and variety of voices. It will strengthen our students' understanding of theme, character development, juxtaposition of perspective, character-driven plots, and how authors use language to create subtle meaning. Finally, we will explore allegory and many other complex literary techniques.

As the MSA Middle School English Department works to improve our curriculum to be accessible and engaging for modern students, we are focusing on obtaining inclusive texts from diverse authors. The eighth graders have benefitted from two new novels the school has invested in during the last two years. That is why we are asking for your gift to help us place Adeymi's unique and influential book in students' hands this year! We welcome your support at whatever level feels right for you and your family.
