This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic kids eager to learn. Over 90% of our students come from low-income households. A large percentage of our families meet the definition of homeless, living in garages or multiple families in one residence. My kids' parents are struggling to pay rent and get food on the table. And yet, our children still want to create, read, write, and learn!
My students worry about coming to school and staying safe; and yet, they still want to come to school to explore, learn and grow.
I am teaching online and trying to meet my students' needs emotionally, as well as academically, during this pandemic. I want them to be safe and stay healthy as they work hard to learn to read, learn to use technology, and at the same time, learn language arts, math, science and social studies.
My Project
Learning online during this pandemic has been difficult for my Kindergartners. Some of them are still struggling to learn their letters and sounds. And some of them do not have the help they need at home to learn their ABC's. Looking at a screen all day can be tiresome. My students need another helpful resource.
These ABC games and toys are low-to-no technology; they are hands-on manipulatives that will help to reinforce learning letters and sounds.
My students will get direct learning with auditory sound from the tech items. They will receive batteries. And they will receive flashcards with letters and pictures that begin with those letters to help reinforce letter/sound relationships. My students will learn to see and say their letters and sounds. These items will be especially helpful to my English as a Second Language (ESL) students who are learning more and more each day.
