Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As a Social Studies teacher in New York City, I encourage my students to creatively present issues related to the time period we are studying. For example, in the last school year, students took on various roles and conducted a "press conference" related to Civil War issues. We have also debated such issues as checks and balances and child labor. Now I want to offer the students the opportunity to literally have their voices heard. Missing from these "press conferences" and debates was one vital component of an actual press conference - a microphone and speakers. The addition of a microphone and boom box with speakers will encourage my students to actively participate in class and will also assist quieter students in making their voices heard. The boom box will also be used in other lessons. We often read and listen to historical fiction novels in class. The boom box will be used to play Books on CD for the students.
