On a typical day, my students take notes in their interactive notebooks using foldable (made with colored papers) as graphic organizers to break down big ideas into manageable segments. Note-taking is fun and precise with foldable. Then students deepen their learning through cooperative learning.
I teach at a school located in an urban community where serving students from the low Socio-economic area.
All the students are from economically disadvantaged communities and my students’ achievement levels range from advanced to far below basic. I teach four 8th grade math classes and one algebra class. my students ranging in age from 13 to 15 years old. I have total 168 students. 95% are Hispanic and 5% of are black. Some of my students are predominately visual learners. Some of them are predominately tactile learners. Some are combination of different learning styles. Most of them are courteous, positive, and polite. My students love to use colored papers for their notebooks and projects. They enjoy taking notes with foldables. They enjoy being in a classroom that is colorful, positive and full of energy - filled with their creative assignment and projects.
My Project
My students will be able to use the materials to:
1. make foldables and use them as graphic organizers to break down big ideas into manageable segments.
2. use foldables to refine and reorganize their notes and integrate what they are learning deeply in new creative ways.
3. make books using their own unique thought process and aesthetic for various projects such ABC books (vocabulary words), Key Concept Book (core concepts they are learning), Real Life Slope, Real Life Parabolas...etc.
4. showcase whey are learning by creating visual presentation (posters) for their projects and presentations such as Real Life Slope, Real Life parabolas, Real Life Math in Magazine, Advertising a Mathematics concept...so forth.
Donations to this project will provide my students the colored paper and construction paper they need for their interactive notebooks, novelty projects, and creative book-making.
It also makes differentiate instruction, novelty and project-base learning instructional strategies possible in my classroom. Students will be able to use novelty and projects to extend their imagination, harness their creativity, digest information in their own unique, meaningful and interesting ways.
